What to Do If Your Passport Is Lost or Stolen in Mexico

February 27, 20265 min readBy TravelCareMexico Team

Losing your passport in Mexico — whether to theft, misplacement, or damage — is one of the most stressful things that can happen on a trip. But it is a solvable problem, and thousands of tourists navigate it every year. The key is knowing the steps in advance so you are not making decisions in a panic.

Step 1: File a Police Report

Report the loss or theft to local police immediately and get a copy of the report. This document (called a denuncia) is required by your embassy to issue an emergency passport. It also protects you if someone attempts to use your stolen identity. Your emergency concierge can assist with translation and ensure the report is completed correctly.

Step 2: Contact Your Embassy or Consulate

U.S. citizens: The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City (1 800 681 9374) and consulates in Cancún, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, and other cities can issue emergency passports. Call as soon as possible — appointments fill quickly, especially during peak travel season.

Canadian citizens: Contact the Embassy of Canada in Mexico City (+52 55 5724 7900) or the consulate nearest to your location. Canada also offers emergency travel documents for citizens stranded abroad.

Step 3: Gather What You Need

To receive an emergency passport, you will typically need: the police report (denuncia), a photo ID such as a driver's license, passport photos (available at most Mexican pharmacies), proof of travel such as a flight itinerary or hotel booking, and the applicable fee in cash or by credit card.

Why a Digital Backup Matters

Before any international trip, photograph your passport, visa, and other critical documents. Email the photos to yourself or save them in cloud storage. A digital copy significantly speeds up the emergency passport process and makes the police report easier to file accurately.

How Concierge Support Helps

If your passport is stolen, your emergency concierge can help you locate the nearest embassy or consulate, prepare for your appointment, communicate in Spanish with local authorities, and coordinate with your airline about rebooking — so you are not navigating a foreign bureaucratic system alone, in a second language, without your documents.
